Creating Inclusive Summer Fun with Ascend Transition Services in Southwest Florida

Southwest Florida Circus Company

August 24, 2026

Southwest Florida Circus Company has had the opportunity to work with Ascend Transition Services for two very different summer experiences: a carnival-themed event filled with interactive activities and a high-energy foam party through what is now our sister brand.

The activities were different, but the goal was the same:

Create an environment where everyone could participate, have fun, interact, and enjoy the experience in a way that worked for them.

Ascend Transition Services supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Southwest Florida, helping individuals build independence while staying active and connected to their community.

About Ascend Transition Services

Ascend Transition Services is a Southwest Florida organization dedicated to creating opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Their mission centers around helping members achieve greater independence and community inclusion while maintaining an active and fulfilling lifestyle. Ascend offers programs including life-skills training, home services, nursing care, supported employment and other community-based services.

Ascend reports supporting dozens of members and families throughout the Southwest Florida community, with programming designed primarily for adults age 21 and older.

But an important part of community inclusion is also something much simpler:

Having opportunities to get together, play, celebrate and have fun.

Entertainment Should Be Inclusive Without Feeling Different

When entertainment is being planned for adults with disabilities, the goal shouldn't be to make the experience feel separate or overly simplified.

It should still be exciting.

It should still feel social.

It should still create opportunities for people to participate, laugh, compete, move around, and enjoy themselves.

The key is creating enough flexibility that people can engage with the experience in ways that feel comfortable to them.

Bringing a Live Circus Show to Ascend

For one of our events with Ascend, the theme was carnival and circus fun.

Our contribution was a 30-minute live circus show designed to give participants a featured entertainment experience they could enjoy together.

Rather than setting up multiple game stations, everyone could gather around one performance and share the same moment.

A live circus show creates something different from an open activity.

The audience gets to:

  • Watch together
  • Laugh together
  • React as a group
  • Cheer for volunteers
  • Participate when invited
  • Experience visual circus skills up close
  • Share the moment with friends and staff

The energy of the audience becomes part of the performance itself.

A Shared Experience Can Bring People Together

One of the strengths of a featured show is that it creates a common experience.

Everyone may react differently, but everyone has something to talk about afterward.

Someone may love the juggling.

Someone else may enjoy the comedy.

Another person may be excited to volunteer.

Others may simply enjoy watching their friends react.

There isn't one correct way to participate.

That flexibility is important.

A great live performance gives the audience room to enjoy the experience in their own way while still feeling like part of the group.

Entertainment Should Meet the Audience Where They Are

Every audience is different.

That is true whether we're performing at a birthday party, corporate event, school, resort, nonprofit program, or community organization.

A professional entertainer should be able to read the room and adjust things like:

  • Pacing
  • Audience interaction
  • Volunteer selection
  • Energy
  • Communication
  • Timing

without talking down to anyone.

At the Ascend event, the goal was to keep the show fun and interactive while allowing participants to engage at whatever level felt comfortable to them.

People don't all have to participate the same way to be part of the same experience.

Acend Foam Party Swfl

A Completely Different Experience: Foam Party

Our second summer event with Ascend looked nothing like the first.

Instead of gathering everyone together for a featured performance, we brought out the foam.

The foam party created one large shared environment filled with music, movement, and plenty of opportunities to jump in and have fun.

Foam-party experiences are now offered through our sister brand, but this event remains one of our favorite examples of how flexible this type of entertainment can be.

Participants could:

  • Dance
  • Move through the foam
  • Play with friends
  • Enjoy the music
  • Cool off
  • Step away and take a break whenever they wanted

There was no requirement that everyone participate in exactly the same way.

That was part of what made it work.

Let People Choose How They Want to Participate

Some people want to run straight into the middle of the foam.

Some want to dance around the edges.

Some participate for a few minutes and then take a break.

Others may simply enjoy watching what is happening around them.

All of those are valid ways to experience an event.

A good entertainment setup shouldn't force everyone into exactly the same kind of participation.

It should create opportunities and let guests find the version of the experience that works for them.

Two Completely Different Events, One Approach

The circus show and foam party couldn't have been more different.

The Circus-Themed Event

  • Structured 30-minute performance
  • Shared audience experience
  • Visual circus entertainment
  • Group laughter and interaction
  • Opportunities for audience participation

The Foam Party

  • Open-format activity
  • Music and movement
  • Flexible participation
  • Highly interactive environment
  • Guests could enter and leave the activity freely

What connected them wasn't the type of entertainment.

It was the approach:

Pay attention to the people in front of you and create an experience that works for the actual audience.

What Ascend Had to Say

After working together, Ascend shared this Google review:

“Amazing! They came out to our summer camp for adults with disabilities and they were outstanding and so accommodating!!!”

— Ascend Transition Services

That word — accommodating — means a lot to us.

Being accommodating isn't about reducing the quality of an experience.

It's about communicating, paying attention, remaining flexible, and recognizing that every group has different needs.

Our job is not to force every event into the exact same format.

Our job is to help create an experience that makes sense for the people attending.

Why Experiences Like These Matter

Ascend's mission goes far beyond recreational events.

Their work supports independence, life skills, employment opportunities, community participation, and ongoing support for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Events are only one small part of that larger picture.

But recreation and social experiences matter too.

They give people opportunities to:

  • Spend time with friends
  • Try something new
  • Participate in a group experience
  • Laugh together
  • Move and be active
  • Build memories
  • Simply enjoy themselves

Sometimes community inclusion looks like learning a new independent-living skill.

Sometimes it looks like participating in employment or volunteering.

And sometimes it looks like laughing through a circus show or jumping into a giant pile of foam on a summer afternoon.

All of those experiences contribute to a fuller community life.

Planning an Inclusive Community Event?

Organizations serving adults with disabilities don't necessarily need an entirely different category of entertainment.

They need entertainment that is professionally delivered, respectful, flexible, and appropriate for the audience.

Depending on the event, options may include:

  • Live circus shows
  • Magicians
  • Jugglers
  • Balloon twisting
  • Face painting
  • Carnival entertainment
  • Interactive performances
  • Music
  • Foam experiences through our sister brand
  • Other specialty entertainment

The right choice depends on the participants, environment, event schedule, available space, and goals for the day.

Tell us about your group and what you're planning, and we'll help you explore entertainment that may be a good fit.

Two Events, One Goal: Make Sure Everyone Gets to Have Fun

Our two events with Ascend looked completely different.

One brought everyone together for a 30-minute live circus show.

The other brought music, movement, and a whole lot of foam.

What connected them was the opportunity to create something fun, social, interactive, and flexible enough for people to enjoy in their own way.

We're grateful that Ascend trusted us to be part of their summer programming, and we're especially grateful for their kind feedback afterward.

Most importantly, we're glad we had the opportunity to spend a couple of days doing something that should never be overlooked:

having fun together.
